What is “Select Lite”?

For Fall Ball 2018, West Grove is offering a variation of the standard Select program.  Typically a Select program is in lieu of a regular Fall Rec team, but Select Lite is something new that some of the Central League Fall Ball (CLFB) teams (the leagues we all play during Fall Ball) have opted to try.  This Select Lite option is a way to offer players more competition than a typical rec team, but for a fraction of the cost and time commitment.

A Select Lite team is a more challenging team, typically having players of an All-Star caliber.  The Select Lite team would play other Select Lite teams within the CLFB.

When will the teams play?

The Select Lite teams may have either a practice, or play in one of the CLFB scheduled Friendlies (casual games where the teams may play 2-4 games per day) on Sundays only.  It is estimated that we will have 1-2 Friendlies scheduled per month for the fall season (Sept – Nov).  8U friendlies would be 2 games per day, while 10U or 12U would be 3 games per day.

What divisions will participate?

West Grove is anticipating having Select Lite teams in the 8U, 10U and 12U divisions.  8U participation from other leagues may be lacking, in which case the Select Lite format for that division may differ.

Who is Coaching the teams?

Coaches will submit applications to coach a Select team by August 21, 2018.  A coach will be selected by the WGGSL Board of Directors for each division.

How are the teams selected?

To be chosen for a Select Lite team, players must attend a practice try-out (approximately 2 hours) to be held on Sunday, August 26, 2018 and Sunday, September 9, 2018.  Times for each division will be announced and posted on the website shortly.  The selected Coach and a panel of independent persons (not having a daughter participating in the try-out) will rate the girls and will collectively select the team. Each team may carry from 12-15 girls, subject to the discretion of the coach and panel.  At this time, a secondary try-out has not been scheduled.  However, one may be scheduled if enough players cannot make the scheduled try-out.

Who can try out?

Any West Grove player in good standing with the league AND that played in Spring 2018 or is registered to play in Fall 2018 may try out and participate on a Select Lite team.  If a player is currently registered to play Fall, playing on the Select Lite team will be in addition to the regular fall rec team.

Players may try-out for the division in which they are age eligible to participate, or may try-out for the division they are currently playing fall ball, but may attend only one try-out.  For example, an 8U eligible player playing up in 10U may try out for either division, but must choose only one.

What if there are not enough players that attend try-outs?

If there is insufficient coach or player interest in any of the divisions, a Select team for that division will not be formed.

How does this differ from the regular Fall Rec season?

The Select Lite team will be independent of the regular fall season.  Any pitching out rules pertinent to the fall season will not be applicable to or include any games played by Select Lite pitchers.  The rules for the friendlies will likely be the same as the fall season, but may have some variations.

What is the cost?

The cost to participate on the Select team is $100 per player.  That amount includes the cost of all Friendlies participation and a t-shirt.  Teams may choose to raise additional funds from sponsorships. There are no Snack Bar duties associated with the Select Lite team.

The cost for the 8U division may also be lower, depending on participation from other leagues.

How does my daughter sign-up?

Please email select@westgrovesoftball.com to register for the try-outs or with any questions.  The try-outs will be scheduled based on the interest received. Please indicate your daughter’s name and the division she will trying out for.
